Winter may be on its way, but the business of keeping people cool is nonetheless generating 60 jobs in the Lebanon area this season.

Emerson Climate Technologies held a job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday with the intent of hiring 60 night shift assemblers who will be phased in through the month of December.

According to Emerson plant manager Keith Calhoun, the plant is headed into its busy season and consequently needs more employees. Because Emerson makes compressors for air conditioners, business picks up in January and February in advance of summer, when people will need the air conditioners.

Calhoun said that business tends to slow down beginning in August or September and continuing through December, but this year late summer heat kept the company’s customers pulling inventory from Emerson through the fall.

Generally, Emerson intends to keep the employees that it will hire through Friday’s job fair, although that is dependent on the economy and next year’s weather.

Calhoun stated, “When we hire folks and we train them and provide benefits for them, we’re not looking to let them go — especially when it’s a very competitive labor market.”

Regarding the potential for the new hires to stay year-round, Calhoun also noted that the economy looks good, and Emerson’s customers are “doing pretty well in the air conditioning business this year.”

At about noon on Friday, Calhoun estimated that the company had received about 60 applications during the job fair, and at the time there were two hours left.
